Excellent post, Neville. I have been talking to corporate clients re: podcasting for internal communications because the potential is wonderful, with a low cost. That's music to their ears. ;-)

Thanks for this Neville. It has made me feel a little slow in realising some of the potential for podcasting as an internal comms tool - PRodcasting, anyone?

I think it's the humanizing effect that's one of the most appealing factors, Giovanni. Especially in large organizations, with dispersed workforces where hardly anyone knows anyone, the humanizing effect that a person's voice can have on the listener can make an enormous difference to the broader organizational issues of breaking down barriers and just helping people get to know one another a little more.

There are other ways of doing this, of course - face-to-face goes without saying (but I'm saying it) - but audio in the form of a podcast really is an easy option.

Interesting to learn that firms like HP and Cisco are already using this medium. Firms like those two have always been leaders in the practice of effective employee communication. I'd love to know of others!

Great piece ... reminds me of some of the experiments that are happening with large companies in my neck of the woods (Silicon Valley). HP and Cisco have both embraced podcasting, and many other tech companies -- the early adopters -- are beginning to see it as a low-cost, lightweight tool that can replace or at least supplement the incumbent broadcast tools. More important, businesses are beginning to understand that the "humanizing" effect of this approach may have an even greater payoff.
